1. Jan 28,  · This trio outing by Mal Waldron for the Timeless label revisits, as the title suggests, selections that have come to be associated with Billie Holiday (or, Lady Day). Waldron paces himself like the schooled and comfortable cat that he was, his playing somewhat serious and sad. Waldron is, of course, the standout on this album/5(4).

2. Mal Waldron's got no more tears for Lady Day – but maybe that's because so many of the pianist's previous albums evoked his relationship with Billie Holiday! Shedding that reference, just focus on the strength of Waldron in a trio setting – that mature, moody style that really showed how much Mal had grown during his 60s and 70s years recording abroad, then able to bring back that Brand: Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan) (Label).

7. Mal Waldron contributes with his minimal laid back cool out piano touches. He never plays too much, but what he is playing is always in the right frame of time. He must had been a quiet person, maybe even shy, but he is always there and somehow he has the rare gift of playing the right chords constantly.
